One of the most important jewels of Buenos Aires, with an endless number of talented people willing to show their passion and art through music and dance

Located in the heart of the city of Buenos Aires, it was inaugurated on May 25th 1908 with a performance of Giuseppe Verdis Aïda. This place replaced the original theater, which operated between 1857 and 1888 in the block that now there is  the offices of Argentine Nacion´s Bank , facing  in Plaza de Mayo.

It is considered one of the most important opera houses in the world. It is rich and prestigious history comes from his exceptional acoustics and architectural features rank it among best theaters such as Teatro la Scala in Milan, the Paris Opera House, the Vienna State Opera, the Royal Opera House in London, and the Metropolitan Opera House in New York.

At the beginning, many opera companies played there, in 1925 these companies started to work there with their own sessions (orchestra, ballet and choir) showing the audience great quality performances, financed by the city budget and has been able to set up whole productions on its own because of the professionalism of its specialised stagecraft staff.

In  2010 the city government, the building,  was restored to all . The original glory
The Colon theater it’s a proud of the Argentinian culture and a standard for opera, ballet and classical music around the world.

The theater consists of three parts:

  • Permanent Ballet Company
  • Permanent Choir
  • Buenos Aires Philharmonic Orchesta

Did you know who play there?

During the history of the theatre, the most importants artists visited and played the Colon such as: Enrico Caruso, Claudia Muzio, Maria Callas, Régine Crespin, Birgit Nilsson, Plácido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti, dancers such as Vaslav Nijinski, Margot Fonteyn, Maia Plisetskaia, Rudolf Nureyev, Mijail Barishnikov, and conductors such as Arturo Toscanini, Herbert von Karajan, Héctor Panizza, Ferdinand Leitner, among others. As well many famous composers to come to the theater to conduct or supervise the first performances of their productions such as Camille Saint-Saëns, Pietro Mascagni and Ottorino Respighi.

For these reasons, I recommend visiting  whenever there is an occasion for a wonderful experience.
